Hi Mazzy has always been nervous of other dogs, but we have never given up trying to socialise her. She takes a little time to get used to other dogs. As a youngkin she was a puppy school dropout. (We should teach her to sing that ). It would be great to pair her up with a dog that is calm in a...

I kept her company while she waited for the ambulance but was upset when they took her away (and I didn't even get fed!). Then I had to stay at a friends' house for a few days and I finally got to come home yesterday. Mummy just sits on the couch all day and I am not allowed up to give her cuddles and everytime she moves she has these big grey things that I'm worried she might hit me with by accident. I don't know what's happening but I sure am worried about mummy.  less

in the topic Jumping in the forum Behaviour
The difficulty I have with stopping my dog jumping is consistency - particularly getting other people to enforce "no jumping". Lots of people say "he's sooo cute" and just let him jump, even if I ask them to please make him sit for pats. For larger dogs, you can try lifting a knee as they jump - a knee to the chest is a disincentive to jumping again. Just don't do it too hard - my uncle once did it to our family dog so hard she did a somersault and was winded (mind you, it stopped her jumping for a while...). The other thing you can try is turning your back on a jumping dog; this only works for dogs that care which side of you they jump on.

in the topic Cesar Milan in the forum Behaviour
I'm not overly fond of Cesar, but of the few episodes I've seen, the vast majority of cases have just been really basic owner-training. For example, a beagle who liked to steal things and chew them up because the owners kept giving her treats to get the items back and were then surprised that she kept stealing things! In these cases the way Cesar deals with it is reasonable (basically exercise your dog, have consistent rules, don't reward bad behaviour, pretty obvious stuff), though the fact that these idiots have pets to begin with is worrying.

Also, if your pup's teething, make sure to give her stuff she *is* allowed to chew on!

in the topic Biting!!!!!!! in the forum Behaviour
Try making a whining sound like another puppy would. That's how dogs tell one another "that's too hard". If your pup learns that all biting is too hard she won't bite at all.

in the topic Great Dog Walks in the forum Walking and Socialising
In the ACT, you can find out whether an area allows dogs off-lead on this map: http://www.gim.act.gov.au/website/gimmapviewer/viewer.htm?SERVICE=dog&QUERYDOG=yes&TITLE=Dog%20Exercise%20Areas&LOGO=Tams_Colour_logo2.gif It's a poorly designed service but the idea is good and it is still useful. The good news is that most suburban ovals and reserves are dog-friendly and many of them are off-lead. I can recommend Mt Rogers (off lead) and The Pinnacle and Mt Painter (on lead) as great places to walk in the Belconnen area.
