THERE is only one way of dishing out comfort and dealing with the tears and fears of kids who are stressed, sick or scared, the Herald Sun writes.
The warm eyes and wagging tail of a real dog better reduces anxiety than toy animals or friendly people, a European study has found.
But the happy results of having hounds on hand as "helpers" is already well known among visitors and staff in Geelong, where Delta Therapy Dogs regularly pop in.
"A dog makes an unspoken connection with sick or stressed people as soon as they see them," said Geelong Delta spokeswoman Vanda Iwanowski.
Ms Iwanowski co-ordinates 700 volunteers with almost 1000 dogs who visit 60 local centres a week.
"It's a subject that should be taken more seriously as a science because we see the real results and effect dogs have on sick people week in and week out," she said.
