I just read the link, and agree, dominance based training is not ideal. I was given an excellent training technique called "triangle of temptation" when I adopted Bosley & again when I adopted Zoe. It is very effective and allows my dogs to find their place in our "pack" without having to force "dominance" on them. I have since read a number of articles with regard to animal behaviour and all say that dominance based techniques are undesirable and that dogs require ongoing training throughout their life. - Team BoZo's mum -

I am a fan of Cesar and his methods, especially his theories on walks and feeding. Our dog used to "dominate" and growl sometimes when he had a bone. After spending 2 hours with a dog trainer who (we discovered later, after we started to watch Cesar's show) uses very similar techniques, teaching him to walk in line with/or behind us and only eat when he is allowed to, he is a new dog. The trainer explained that our tiny little spoodle now understands that he does not HAVE to be the leader of our pack, so he can just follow behind and relax, being told what to do by the packleader. Ossie now cannot WAIT to get going, and stands in line with our legs, wagging his tail, getting ready for his patrol. He never ever growls, and seems much happier and relaxed. -

I'm not overly fond of Cesar, but of the few episodes I've seen, the vast majority of cases have just been really basic owner-training. For example, a beagle who liked to steal things and chew them up because the owners kept giving her treats to get the items back and were then surprised that she kept stealing things! In these cases the way Cesar deals with it is reasonable (basically exercise your dog, have consistent rules, don't reward bad behaviour, pretty obvious stuff), though the fact that these idiots have pets to begin with is worrying. -

I absolutely detest Cesar Milan and believe he is nothing more than a bully. I just can't understand the need for choke/check chains, prong collars, electric shock collars, putting dogs into submissive positions (alpha rolls) and keeping them in anxiety causing situations with no escape to desensitise it (flooding), among other things!!! Some of his video clips from his Dog Whisperer program are extremely upsetting to me.
I believe in positive reinforcement and rewarding good behaviour and this has worked best for my animals.

positive reinforcements are not always optional. perfect example of a case i had last week. i was working with a dog aggressive pit bull. he tried to attack/kill my dog Harlem, hundreds of times in a two hour session whilst i was rehabilitating the pit bull. the only option i had to prevent the pit bull from killing was the choke chain as he ripped off his muzzle within the first 20 seconds. now am i a bully?
