Conservative management of cruciate damage

Kira has torn the cruciate ligament on her right knee. Surgery is the most popular option but it's expensive, painful and the success rate is low. I've been reading about conservative management, which consists of non-surgical treatments for an injury. Our vet has agreed to help us this way. But if it doesn't look like it's working after 2 months then surgery it'll have to be. Has anyone successfully treated their dog with conservative management? I'd love to hear from you and any specifics that worked.

It's been a while but I wanted to provide an update. Despite two different vets (one traditional the other wholistic) both advising surgery Kira has managed to heal without it. Thanks to chiropractic care helping Kira with her posture and gait the scar tissue has grown strong around the injury (this is what surgery encourages just in a more aggressive way). She no longer limps, doesn't slip on floorboards, can walk and run well. We still don't let her off leash or play with dogs as a precaution but it's a small price to pay. And she is very happy.
